WGC CA Championship

This week we are treated to another WGC event in the form of the CA Championship.  The field for this event is of the highest calibre and the best you are likely to find outside of a major, so it is going to be a competetive event.  The CA Championship is being held at the Blue Monster Course of the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, in Doral Florida.  Although the name suggests otherwise this course is more suited to players who are accurate off the tee, rather than the long hitters.

And it's with the more accurate players off the tee where we begin our hunt for the most elusive of creatures, a golf winner.  Chris DiMarco is leading the driving accuracy stats for the PGA Tour but he didn't qualify for this event and is instead playing on the other PGA Tour event this week the Puerto Rico Open.  Second in the list is Heath Slocum,  although Slocum isn't a household name he has quietly been going about his business this season, making the cut in the five tournaments he's played, including one top 25 finish.  He also ranks highly on the GIR list, which can be credited to his consistency off the tee, but you still have to hit the green.  I don't consider Slocum as winner material ,partly due to his only appearance at Doral in the CA Championship ended with Slocum finishing dead last, but you could find a lot worse bets than the 175/1 offered for this ultra consistent player.

Lying in 11th on the driving accuracy list is Jim Furyk,  although there are players higher on the list who are playing in Miami this week, its Furyk's excellent record at this course in this event (3rd last year and T2nd in 2008) that gets him the nod.  And with a reasonable start to 2010 including two top 25 finishes, puntinplay followers will be looking at a decent return when Furyk does the business in Miami.
