On many occasions it can be a benefit to bet early and that could be the case today in the Open. The weather forecast if it is to be believed dictates that the early starters should have the best of the weather.
There is no doubt that proven wind performers will be much fancied but the weather s meant to deteriorate as the day progresses therefore we think it might be worth a speculative punt on a couple of mid-to early starters. Justin Rose kicks-off his round at 10.50 and he looks an each-way puntinplay at +2, six shots behind the leader.
Rose has been playing well without getting his head in front this year. He did miss the cut in the US Open but after a poor opening round in the Masters he stayed on well at the weekend to finish 11th. His last two outings have delivered good indicators of his well being – fifteenth in Scotland last week and previously 14th at the AT&T. He can plays links well and at 125/1 he could run a big weekend race where the only certainty is that there will be much change at the top of the learderboard.
The other player that has to be included in calculations is Jason Day. He is five off the lead but again we fully anticipate a concertina impact by the close of play. Day now dines at the top table and quite often has a reserved seat near the window. He has finished first of the losers in both 2011 majors. He must go close and at 50/1 he is bigger than the start of play but check the forecast before playing this Aussie as he may be going out in the teeth of the gale.
