Fernando Verdasco and Roger Federer eased their way into the next
round of the appropriately named Rogers Cup in Toronto last night.
Verdasco who hasn't been in great form of late, looked like he was
running late for a train to Madrid as he blew through the first set
six Zip and then lead four one in the next but Eduardo Schwank then
staged an unexpected fight back and claimed the second 7-5.
Verdasco took an early break in the decider and despite having to save
two break points in game seven eventually took the set and the match
6-0,5-7,6-2. The encouraging element for the Verdasco fans was the
serving of the Spaniard who had a near 80% first service success stat.
Roger Federer eased through to a potential meet up with Nicolas Almagro in round
three following a straight sets victory over Juan Ignacio Chela. It wasn't
totally convincing as the first went to break but Fedex has eased
himself back into competitive tennis following his summer break.
Nadal is now a 2/1 chance for the tournament. Verdasco advised at 66/1 is now a general 33/1 and Berdych who was selected to win his quarter is 2/1 from the advised 7/2.
