The two in-form teams go head to head later on today (Sky Sports 1 17:30) as the Wigan Warriors make the short trip up the M6 to the Halliwell Jones Stadium as they take on Warrington. Both teams have played some exhilarating football so far this season and this can be a real test of both of their characters. They have both scored in excess of 70 points each so far and have the two best goal differences in the league. Warrington showed grit and determination to grind out the win against Castleford with ever present Lee Briers managing to tear apart their defence with his excellent kicking ability. This could be the key to breaking the Wigan defence which has in truth come on leaps and bounds from previous years. The Warrior’s defence has made a solid start to the season letting in only 12 points in 160 minutes of play, comparing that to last year when they leaked in 46 points over the same period. It is worth noting though that the Cherry and Whites have never won at Warrington in the league since 2003 when they won 18-16.
Amos Roberts has made a blistering start to the new season this year, scoring both the 1st tries for the two games previous. Similarly Chris Riley has also flown out of the traps and is the league’s leading tryscorer with 6 in total so far. Both players are easily capable of leading the way in this fixture and are available at odds of 14/1 (Roberts – Ladbrokes/Stan James) and 12/1 (Riley – Ladbrokes/Stan James) to score the 1st try of the game.
Bookmakers make the Wolves the slight favourites (8/13 Totesport, Coral) but Wigan may just edge it in what should be the best game of the round.
