We have been enjoying a rich vein of form on the boxing front recently and after finding winners in the last four Friday Fight Nights, we made it a high five with a pair of payouts in tonight’s contest.
Mathew Hatton, brother of Ricky, made a successful defence of his European welterweight crown after a points win over Ukrainian Yuriy Nuzhnenko but the shaven headed Manc didn’t have it all his own way.
Caught by a short hook in the opening round, Hatton went over for the count of eight and looked to be out on his feet as he battled against the clock to make it into the break in one piece. Cheered on by his brother sat at ringside, Magic Matt recovered however to box his way to victory on the judges’ scorecards thanks to a solid jab and some head jolting straight right hands.
The current king of the continent had to dig deep for his toughest test to date but he is from a tough fighting family after all and done enough to win the contest by a massive margin of seven rounds on judge Franco Ciminale’s scorecard.
The fighting brothers promised to celebrate with the ‘odd’ pint of Guinness, which won’t do Ricky’s expanding waist line any good, but a tidy profit was reward enough for us if you listened to my Hatton win outright and Hatton win on points tip.
Mathew will now move on to bigger and better things, with a shot at the world title a real possibility, whilst Ricky looks far too comfortable in his role as a promoter to dust off the gloves again.
