Mikael D'Haguenet pleased connections in a schooling session at Leopardstown today, but no decision has been made on whether he will line up at next month's Cheltenham Festival.
The six-year-old, a 14-1 shot for the RSA, travelled powerfully in the hands of Ruby Walsh but was careful at many of his fences rather than flambouyant.
However he did put in a couple of very good jumps when asked for a "big one" and clearly retains the engine which powered him to a brilliant victory in last season's Ballymore.
Rich Ricci, husband of owner Susannah, told Attheraces: "I'm happy enough, the engine is definitely still there. His jumping was a bit careful, but we'd rather him be like that than the other way."
Mikael D'Haguenet was last seen in action when winning over hurdles at Punchestown in May and also holds an entry in the Arkle Trophy for which he is a 25-1 shot.
Ricci added: "We will see how he is the next few days and we have always wanted to give him every opportunity to get there (Cheltenham). But we won't do anything to jeopardise the horse as he is a star and a Gold Cup horse in the making.
"We need to balance out the risk with the reward. He is a very exciting horse and we will have to see what happens."
Trainer Willie Mullins was "delighted" with what he saw.
He said: "He was sure-footed, if a little slow and deliberate at one or two. But he is very sure of himself. It was a good piece of work and I'm delighted with him.
"I like the way he finished with J'y Vole. She was very good and will go for the Ryanair now. We will see how Mikael is before making any decision."
