Puntinplay's boxing correspondant Frank Monkhouse trained side by side with featherweight Michael Coveney at East London’s Peacock Gym this week as he prepared for tonight’s clash with Patrick Hyland for the Irish title in Dublin.
The West Ham southpaw qualifies through his Irish born father and although many expect current holder Hyland to continue his undefeated run, Coveney makes the short flight full of confidence.
“It was a bit of a surprise to be offered this chance, Coveney told puntinplay readers, but I have been over in Ireland sparring a few times and they know all about me there".
"Winning this title would open a few doors for me and I’m certainly going to grab this chance with both hands”.
“I boxed six rounds at the Brentwood Leisure Centre not too long ago and felt fine so the step back up to ten shouldn’t be a problem. My fitness is there, my weight is coming down nicely and I’m starting to get the rewards for all my hard work in the gym."
“I have shared a ring with the best fighters at the weight and Hyland is going to get a shock when he realises I am there to win”
Home town fighter, and current holder of the title Hyland, enters this one as a convincing 1/25 favourite with Boylesports whilst Coveney is a value 10/1 to spring a surprise.
The outsider has more experience and has been in with a much higher calibre of opponent throughout his career, meaning he could be the value of the evening.
Having seen Coveney in the gym this week i can tell you that he is looking sharper than ever after a gruelling schedule and the underdog tag should suit him right down to the ground.
Is there anything we wont do to uncover some value?
