Hernandez a cunning bet at 12/5

(First Published: Saturday 1st October 2011 at 12:38hrs GMT)

Yoan Pablo Hernandez looks set for the biggest fight of his career when he challenges IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham in Neubrandenburg, Germany, tonight and I feel that this fight represents the weekend's best boxing wager.

Former Cuban amateur sensation Hernandez (24-1, 13 KOs), like so many Cubans, fled his native country to set up residence in Germany. The cruiserweight title challenger is a fast but not necessarily a big puncher, but the southpaw is on a winning run of 10 fights since being blown away by big punching Wayne ”Big Truck” Braithwaite.

He put arguably his best performance yet when  recently dispatchimng Steve Herlieus in seven rounds, yet in this bout he is the outsider with the bookmakers despite being considered the "home" fighter yet is.

That's because Cunningham (24-2, 12 KOs) is considered by many to be top dog in the Cruiserweight division and is remembered best of all for his up and down see-saw battle with recent Vitali Klitsckho victim Tomasz Adamek.

However in my opinion, over his last four fights has shown signs of wear and tear and at 35-years-old isn’t going to get any better.

I expect Yoan Pablo Hernandez to be able to use his speed to his distinct advantage - beating Cunningham to the punch and stinging him with fast accurate shots.

Cunningham isn’t the biggest punching in the Cruiserweight division and that will give Hernandez the confidence to stand and trade if he has to without fearing a Braithwaite style haymaker.

I think this will be Hernandez coming out party and the odds on him getting rid of Cunningham in the latter stages of the fight represent fantastic value.
