Wayne Rooney is in top form at the moment and his double strike in Milan has got the footballing world abuzz with his name.
In truth, his performance at the San Siro was not among his best this term.
Granted, he despatched two clinically-taken headers but he was also guilty of an embarrassing air shot inside the box in the first half and a bizarre toe-poke out of play when sent clear by Patrice Evra's juddering challenge in the second.
The Manchester United star was also guilty of producing a couple of decent shots from the edge of the box when he would have normally found the net if at the peak of his powers.
That said, his was an accomplished display in leading the line on his own again and there was one positive run through the ageing Rossoneri backline that really got you off your seat. Hopefully, he show the same thrust and confidence in the World Cup finals this summer.
Sky Bet have reacted to his brace by slashing the odds on him becoming 2010 World Player of the Year from 10/1 to 7/2.
In any stretch of the imagination, this is a wild over-reaction.
2009 winner Cristiano Ronaldo and current holder Lionel Messi are joint-favourites at 3/1.
Basically, it's pretty impossible to speculate about the outcome of the December award because everything will depend on how the major protagonists perform in the remainder of the Champions League and, most importantly, at the World Cup.
It's worth bearing in mind that Portugal have a tough group containing Brazil and Ivory Coast and Argentina under Diego Maradona are an accident waiting to happen.
But it's a fact that there's a lot of expectation on Rooney's shoulders and he's a long way off being voted World Player of the Year at the moment.
A more certain bet is that he'll scoop the PFA Player of the Year prize but Sky Bet's price reflects this. At 1/7, he's unbackable with Cesc Fabregas next best at 11/2 and Didier Drogba 10s. Nobody else really has a shout.
One thing that we did learn from United's win in Milan is that Ronaldinho deserves a place in Brazil's World Cup squad and he could be one to look out for in some of the markets.
It's hard to see him being one of the top goalscorers but the finals have a habit of bringing the best out of the very best and, judging by some of his bewildering skills on Tuesday, there is no doubting the Brazilian's entertainment value and sheer quality.
