Jurgen, who isn’t German, Melzer stood at number eight in the World rankings in April and he looked set to build on a 2010 season that had seen the Austrian make significant strides in terms of his slam performances. The highlight of which, was Paris where he made the semi-final. However this year since he made the last four,on clay at Monte Carlo, he has had a series of what can only be called unsatisfactory results.
His record on the North American swing hasn’t added to his feeling of well being. In Washington, Cincinnati and last week in the Winston-Salem he has been a first round (or first match) victim. His confidence must be shot and although he did win his first round match in straight sets he is worth taking on tomorrow where he faces Igor Kunitsyn for a place in the last 32.
Kunitsyn hasn’t had a fantastic year but he has won matches in Los Angeles, Washington and last week. In addition he pulled back from the dead in his first round match after losing the first two sets.
Melzer isn’t going too far in the Nadal quarter and Kunitsyn is worth a puntinplay at around the 3/1 mark based on current form and the fact that the Russian has won their only competitive meeting.
