Danny To Bow Out

Does Williams have one last dig?

(First Published: Saturday 15th May 2010 at 15:34hrs GMT)

Calzaghe didn’t entertain Froch, Hatton steered clear of Khan but tonight, British champ Danny Williams will give youth a chance when facing young upstart Derek Chisora before calling time on his own career.

Whatever bad press Williams may recieve in the run up to this one, and I have to agree that I have saw him in better shape, he has flown the Union Jack at the highest level and will bow out of the sport having given us more good nights than bad.

The last time we saw Williams he looked to be in the process of inventing a new reality TV show – ‘Boxing On Ice’, as he slipped and stumbled around the Excel Centre ring during an appearance in Prizefighter. He was taken to pieces in embarrassing fashion by Carl ‘The Fridge’ Baker that night and although I believe he would have halted the tubby Yorkshireman had the fight gone at least another round, he was well aware of Matchroom’s set-up and could have no excuses for his poor showing.

The 6ft 3inch Brixton Bomber is fast becoming the joke of British boxing and finds himself as big as 11/4 (Skybet) in the betting ring.

If Williams is the laughing stock of our game, opponent Derek Chisora seems to be establishing himself as somewhat of a hate figure for fans of the noble art. The Zimbabwe born iron man was famously slapped with a four month ring ban and hefty fine after biting Paul Butlin during their 2009 eight rounder. Chisora looked to be controlling the contest and his act of violence made no sense. The Finchley based prospect showed the other side to his game when stopping current Commonwealth king Sam Sexton in 2008.

With an undefeated twelve fight record, ‘Del Boy’ enters as a 4/11 favourite with Sporting Bet.

Chisora has dreamt of a shot at Williams for some time now and he will be chomping at the bit to get in there and prove he is the front runner in a new golden age for British heavyweight boxing. He is as big and strong as they come but he is also inexperienced and leaves his chin out to dry when coming forward, meaning if Williams has one big punch left in him, he could bow out in style by recording a famous KO win at 3/1 (Boylesports).

Judging by his recent performances though I think Williams is finished, maybe some time ago, and the 4/5 about Chisora scoring an inside the distance victory makes more appeal for investors. This bout passing the 7.5 round stage is offered at 2/3 with Skybet and that price looks too big considering Klitschko and Sosnowski couldn't get rid of Danny sooner than that.
