Cambridgeshire Preview: 50/1 First Post should not be underestimated

(First Published: Saturday 24th September 2011 at 08:11hrs GMT)

The big betting race of the day is the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket (3.50) and First Post has a far better chance than his odds of 50/1 indicate.

Derek Haydn Jones' charge has been in the form of his life this summer, winning decent 1m handicaps at Ascot and Sandown.

His one disappointing run came two starts back when last of 13 to Taqleed at Hyadock, but he showed that to be all wrong when bouncing back with an eye-catching fourth to the same horse in the 1m 2f Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury last weekend.

Unlike his wins, where he had trackjed the leaders before being produced late, he was held up well off the pace at the rear of the field before making good hedway on the outside from four out to take a narrow lead two from home.

He then hung left - as he has done in several of his races - and after being headed a furlong from home could find no extra.

A strong travelling type, he is ideally suited when coming off a strong pace, and he is guaranteed to get that this afternoon.

Although he has risen in the weights since his first win this season, he has only gone up 7lb to 87 and to me he showed enough at Newbury that he was capable of winning off that mark.

He also has a good draw in stall 9, as the Silver Cambrideshire yesterday clearly highlighted that the far side was the place to be.

If he can get cover early and tuck in to chase the pace I think can see him running a massive race, and the 50/1 on offer about him with Hills is an insult to his chances.

The other horse that I think is overpriced and worth an interest is Albaqaa at 22/1.

He has bounced back to form for P.J O'Gorman, landing back to back victories here and at Goodwood.

Despite having gone up 11lb for those wins to a mark of 93 he still remains well treated on old form having won off a mark of 95 when beating the useful Distant Memories at Pontefract last April.

He has a great draw in stall 3, and for a horse that comes into this at the top of his game has a huge chance of reaching the frame at the very least.

Recommended bets: 2pts each-way First Post (50/1 Hills - BOG)
2pts each-way Albaqaa (22/1 Coral)
