Big Fight Preview: Mayweather v Ortiz

(First Published: Thursday 15th September 2011 at 06:38hrs GMT)

One of the most famous boxers in the world, Floyd Mayweather, returns to the ring this weekend against "vicious" Victor Ortiz.

Mayweather used to be well known as a boxer in world circles, but now takes himself from court case to various court case in a lifestyle which becomes madder by the minute.

There’s no doubt that he is still one of the most talented boxer's I have ever seen, and in his previous two fights against Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez he virtually played with two world class opponent like a cat plays with a mouse.

within his 41-0 perfect record he has beaten so many of world boxings big names. He is an intelligent fighter in the ring who will study an opponent in the opening rounds before deciding the best and easiest way to victory.

His opponent on Saturday night (8pm) was heavily touted as the next superstar in boxing and blew away the opposition displaying his trademark vicious streak along the way until he run into a more relentless and vicious opponent in Marcos Maidana.

Maidana brutalised and tore out young Victor's heart over 6 explosive rounds and after the result it left a lot of boxing fans questioning the Vicious ones' heart after his post fight comments and the way he was stopped in the fight itself.

After a couple of very average performances he was offered a WBC welterweight title shot against the powerful Andre Berto and it was like watching a different Ortiz as he just would not be denied and literally walked through every bomb Berto detonated on his jaw and won a deserved points decision.

However team Money Mayweather are not as stupid as they seem. They make the right matches at the right time and they now that the hungry young lion Ortiz is made to measure for their man.

He will come forward against Mayweather and try and overpower and overwhelm him by throwing plenty of shots and trying to force “money” onto the ropes.

This is where Floyd comes into his own and really is in his element. He will cover up slip and slide and shoulder roll his way out of trouble really showing the true defensive mastery whilst countering Ortiz with the full armoury at his disposal.

Ortiz will be laying it all on the line giving it his all against a technically superior opponent but ultimately he will fall short.

He has every chance he will make it through to the final bell but he will make a couple of mistakes which the master will exploit and I expect him to be caught clean at some point.

There is every chance he will make a trip to the canvas at some point and that is where I want to play from a betting angle in this fight at the 13/8 on offer. Overall I expect Floyd to close the show very late and probably secure a victory on points.

On the undercard, the famous next big thing - Mexican Saul Alvarez - takes on another small less skilled opponent than himself in the shape of Alfonso Gomez.

Alvarez is best known on British shores for beating Brits Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes. He faces another famous name in Gomez, who won the first ever contender series and is a famous and popular face on American shores and has featured in many high profile fights.

Gomez is the smaller man coming into this one and has no real chance of winning the fight, despite the fact that he has tons of heart and is a durable guy. A small play on Alvarez to win on poinmts at 13/5 looks the value call.

Recommend bets:

0.75 Pts win Victor Ortiz to be knocked down - 13/8 skybet

0.25 Pts win Saul Alvarez to win on points - 13/5 Unibet
