Nicolas Almagro has fallen at the first hurdle for the 12th time in 30 grand slam appearances as he went down to a straight sets defeat to the in-form Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
Apart from a run of games to take the score to 4-3 from 4-0 down Almagro was never really in a momentum position. Benneteau was match tough and saved 12 of 13 break points. Those points turned the game.
The victory opens up the top half of the fourth quarter.
