Questioning was desperately unlucky when heavily backed to land the Cambridegshire and is of major interest at 8/1 to gain compensation in the finale at Newmarket (5.35).
John Gosden's colt found himself well off the pace in the 32 runner field and got badly hampered when attempting to make his move two from home.
That intereference put an end to any chance he had of winning, so it was to his credit that he stayed on strongly to finish a never nearer 14th beaten just over 7 lengths.
There is little doubt that in my mind that he would have gone very close granted anything like a clear run, and he showed on his previous outing when runner-up to King Torus in a listed event at Haydock that he was a progressive type to keep on the right side.
Although he has yet to taste success since scoring on his racecourse debut last year he is clearly a horse with plenty of ability and open to further improvement and should not be underestimated in this line-up.
This is certainly not the strongest of Group 3 contests, and I will be surprised if he is not in the frame at the very least.
I think he will take all the beating, and at 8/1 he looks outstanding each-way value with Coral and Sky Bet who are offering enhanced place terms of 1/4 odds 1,2,3.
Recommended bet: 3pts each-way Questioning (8/1 Coral, Sky Bet - 1/4 odds 1,2,3)
